Karen Alparce-Villanueva

President Philippine Alliance of Patient Organizations (PAPO)

Karen Alparce-Villanueva has over 30 years experience in communications & policy work in various industries: consumer, insurance, travel and pharmaceuticals, the latter of which she spent the last 20 years.

Karen has devoted her long experience in health advocacy to advancing patient rights through her support of the Philippine Alliance of Patient Organizations (PAPO) where she currently serves as President. She is also a Board Member of the Patients for Patient Safety Observatory of the International Alliance of Patient Organizations and the Philippine Tuberculosis Society. She is also a member of the International Patient Advisory Panel of the British Medical Journal (BMJ).

Karen also served as Member of the Board of the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (Philhealth) where she co-created and chaired the Benefits Committee. Prior to that, she was consultant with the Health Promotions and Communication Services unit of the Department of Health (DOH).

Her corporate experience included being External Affairs Director of MSD Philippines handling communications, policy, commercial innovation and market access. She was previously Corporate Affairs Director of Pfizer Philippines and Corporate Communications Manager of Zuellig Pharma Corporation.

Her aspiration is to be able to help realize the dream for every Filipino to have access to high quality and affordable healthcare.
